Revitalizing the Dohnsen Community Center — An Accessible Hub for All Generations

The Dohnsen Community Center, located in the municipality of Halle in Lower Saxony, Germany, has been successfully renovated and transformed into a modern, inclusive place for community life. As a central hub for social exchange, education and shared activities, the building now meets high standards of accessibility, energy efficiency and user comfort.

Following the energy-efficient refurbishment of the multi-purpose hall and the childcare facility “Zwergenland Dohnsen”, the remaining parts of the complex were comprehensively upgraded. With the completion of the renovation, the center now offers significantly improved conditions for people of all ages, an essential contribution in a rural area with limited public gathering spaces.

Modernized, accessible and future-ready

The renovation of the assembly space and sanitary facilities was carried out as part of an integrated development strategy. A former circulation area was reconfigured with a lightweight partition to create an independently usable meeting room, featuring upgraded insulation, contemporary LED lighting, high-quality flooring, and new windows.

The sanitary areas were significantly expanded through the conversion of a former storage room and are now fully accessible. The cloakroom was reorganized, and a new entrance door improves accessibility and ease of use for all visitors.

Strengthening social life in Dohnsen

Today, the renewed community center serves as a vibrant meeting place for all generations. Regular activities such as AWO play and learning groups, senior gatherings, and children’s events now take place in contemporary, functional spaces. In a setting without cafés, restaurants, or local shops, the center has become an essential focal point for social life in the rural community.

As part of the Regional Development Concept (REK), the project makes a meaningful contribution to sustainable village development, social inclusion, and the long-term attractiveness of the municipality of Halle.
