A contemporary housing project for the future city

Completed in April 2024, Qube4Living is a contemporary replacement development comprising nine apartments, including eight accessible units and one fully wheelchair-accessible home. The project demonstrates how energy efficiency, accessibility, and urban quality of life can come together within a contemporary architectural framework focused on long-term residential quality.

Accessible living for all generations

The apartments are designed with equal emphasis on architectural quality and everyday functionality. Step-free entrances, generous layouts, and a fully wheelchair-accessible unit create an inclusive living environment that supports people at different stages of life.

Sustainable urban development through replacement construction

The previous five-unit residential building was replaced with a significantly more energy-efficient structure. As the existing building fabric no longer met current expectations for residential quality, energy performance, or accessibility, a vertical extension was not considered viable. Instead, the project increases housing density by building upward within the existing urban footprint, creating additional homes without consuming new land and enabling a more resource-efficient approach to urban development.

Greenery as an integrated part of the architecture

Green spaces and biodiversity form an integral part of the project’s ecological strategy:

  • The previously sealed inner courtyard has been opened up and landscaped
  • Green facades and roof planting improve the microclimate and support biodiversity
  • Generous balconies with integrated planting provide natural shading and create a greener living environment

Architecture shaped by natural materiality

The facades surrounding terraces and balconies are clad in durable timber, giving the building a warm and tactile character. The uppermost floor is defined by its own timber expression, providing the building volume with a distinct and elegant conclusion.

Future-oriented mobility and energy concepts

The project’s mobility strategy supports sustainable everyday transportation through:

  • Weather-protected charging stations for e-bikes and cargo bikes, both along the street and within the courtyard
  • Infrastructure that encourages climate-conscious mobility in an urban setting

The building’s energy supply is based 100% on renewable sources:

  • Über eine großflächige Photovoltaikanlage auf dem Hauptdach
  • In Kombination mit effizienten Wärmepumpen im Hofbereich
